Rx For Soothing My Soul

by Peggy Harris W.A.S.H. Board Chair

“I want to praise the name of God with a song. I want to praise its greatness with a song of thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than sacrificing an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. Oppressed people will see this and rejoice. May the hearts of those who look to God for help be refreshed.” Psalms 69:30-32. God’s Word Version.

It was some years ago during a period when my life seemed turned up side down. While driving in my car doing errands I had two favorite music stations I listened to. One was played pop music of selections I enjoyed while the other was a classical music station. I discovered that I found myself turning from the pop music station to the classical station till finally that was the only one I wanted to listen to.

Since I was raised on classical music I thought maybe that was why that kind of music seemed to sooth my troubled soul the best. One day while talking to a friend, who also was an insurance agent of my experience listening to classical music, she told me she had found the same thing to be true. When talking with other people that I know are going through a difficult time of their life with seemingly insurmountable problems I have encouraged them to listen to classical music too. Some have told me this helped them.

There is a local classical station that I play in my office all the time unless I’m playing CD’s. People will often comment how wonderful the music sounds.

Classical music was the pop music of that day but is timeless in its inspiration. Just as David soothed Saul’s troubled spirit with music so good music can bring healing to our souls. Good music inspires and lifts the spirit like nothing else.
